SMITHVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — Local residents and state officials are remembering the devastating tornado that ripped through the town of Smithville.
Three years later, the town continues to grown and rebuild.
In just minutes, an E-F 5 tornado destroyed Smithville and killed 16 people.
Now, on the third anniversary of the tornado, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held, dedicating the new town hall.
Smithville Mayor Gregg Kennedy says the dedication of the new building shows just how far the town has come in a short period of time.
“Today is a great milestone in our town’s history,” Kennedy said. “We’ve built a beautiful building here, as I said in previous, this is our last of our FEMA pw’s and thats a relief. Now we just got to close them out and work on our private side now, with home development and business development.”
At the ceremony, the state and American flags were presented to the new town hall by state officials.
