CLAY COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – The suspect in a Clay County hostage standoff who was shot by law enforcement has been released from the hospital and is now in custody.
Deputies were called to a mobile home on Highway 46 West, Saturday night.
Sheriff Eddie Scott says suspect Tommy Gandy was holding his uncle hostage at gunpoint.
Deputies were able to distract him, and his uncle ran out of the mobile home.
The Columbus-Lowndes special response team was called in, and at around 9:20 p.m. officers fired tear gas into the residence.
Officials say Gandy exchanged gun shots with law enforcement and was taken to a local hospital.
“We were dealt a bad deck of cards last night, in the end, everything came out well, no fatalities and no one was seriously hurt,” Scott said.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is handling the inquiry into the shooting.
Sheriff Scott says Gandy has been charged with multiple counts of aggravated assault on a police officer.
