COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – The August fourth primary is only a three weeks away, and a Lowndes County candidate for sheriff is accusing another of using county property while talking politics.
Selvain McQueen says his Democratic opponent, Anthony Nelson, was on the front porch of a College Street home campaigning yesterday afternoon.
The former Columbus police chief provided pictures to the media on Friday.
He also provided an audio recording, late Friday evening to WCBI.
McQueen says the woman on the audio is the homeowner. On the recording, she says Nelson was campaigning.
McQueen claims Nelson was in his Lowndes County Juvenile Detention Center provided car, campaigning during county business hours.
“I returned to the residence, at which point one of the occupants of the residence came to me and said that Mr. Nelson had been there campaigning. The attorney general’s office has been notified.”
Nelson, the administrator of the juvenile detention center, tells WCBI that McQueen is digging up dirt.
He says the homeowner had some general questions and concerns about things happening in the area. So, he stopped to have a conversation.Nelson says he did stop by after work to drop off a campaign card.
A message was left for Nelson’s boss, Judge Beverly Franklin.
