Video: School Bond Measure Closer to Ballot in Oktibbeha County

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – It looks like Oktibbeha County residents may get to vote on issuing school improvement bonds. Organizers have until noon Tuesday to present petitions containing signatures of at least 1,500 voters from outside the Starkville school district. As of this afternoon, more than 800 signatures already had been certified and hundreds more have been collected.

The county school district wants to issue $13.2 million in bonds to refurbish the county’s two elementary schools, buy school buses and help pay for a model middle school on the MSU campus. The proposal is part of the county-city school district consolidation that takes effect in July. If issued, the 20-year bonds would require a property tax increase of as much as 15 mills a year.
