TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) -The pastor of a Southern Baptist Church in Tupelo says he’s disappointed, but not surprised at the Supreme Court ruling legalizing same sex marriage.
Keith Cochran is pastor of West Jackson Street Baptist Church and says it is not the Supreme Court’s place to re define marriage.
Pastor Cochran says he could not oversee a same sex wedding because of his biblical beliefs. Cochran says the church has policies in place for couples who want traditional weddings, such as mandatory pre marital counseling.
He says he has been asked many times how people of faith should respond to the court ruling.
“We should respond with Jesus and I think, what I’ve seen on social media, over the last few days, from the events in Charleston and today, from the Supreme Court on marriage, everybody has a thought and comment and I guess that’s fine, that’s what social media is for, but as Christians, our thoughts and comments should center around Jesus, our focus is Jesus, our focus is telling people about Jesus,” Pastor Cochran said.
Pastor Cochran says Christians can honor those in authority, while standing up for Biblical beliefs at the same time.
