COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Shopping is on everyone’s mind right now but I spoke to law enforcement officials earlier today and they have one thing on their minds: keeping shoppers safe. Millions of Americans will hit retail stores this Thanksgiving weekend to take advantage of sales but safety is a priority for law enforcement.
“Certainly, it’s a great idea to shop together. Get you a buddy and that you kind of watch each other it you’re carrying a lot of packages or carrying your purse like that. So it’s a good idea to have a buddy with you,” says Columbus Police Department Assistant Chief Tony Carleton.
Where and how you park your car is also important. Authorities say you should park as close to the store as possible. After parking, make sure that the doors are completely closed and locked so that the vehicle is completely secured.
Law enforcement officials also have a special tip for women.
“If you’re carrying your purse, carry it close to you, not hanging down like normally we do. Carry the purse close to your body,” says Assistant Chief Joe Johnson, Jr of the Columbus Police Department.
Johnson also recommends that shoppers use debit and credit cards and not carry cash. Authorities suggest that you place shopping bags in the trunk and not on the seat of your vehicle. Everyone should still enjoy themselves but just keep these safety in mind while shopping.
