VIDEO: Providing A Voice Against The Violence

ABERDEEN, Miss. (WCBI)- Domestic Violence is an issue that plagues many Americans. In fact, on average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused in the united states.

With such alarming statistics, one golden triangle city is working to bring awareness to the issue.

Saturday the city of Aberdeen hosted its first domestic violence awareness walk.

“It’s just to bring awareness for domestic violence and letting the people out there know, letting the women know that we are here and we are walking for them,” says Event Organizer Kenyatta Howard.

The three mile walk began in down town. Walkers carried banners showing support for lost love ones while also raising their voices. The walk ended with a balloon release.

“In remembrance of women who have lost their lives to domestic violence but also women who are afraid to come forth and speak on this issue. This release is to release their voice,” says Dig Deeper Founder Falicia Fort.

Fort says women need to know the none profit organization is here to help in the fight.

“It’s for women who have been through domestic violence sexual abuse and it’s just to let them know they have someone fighting on their behalf,” says Fort.

If you find yourself needing assistance, Howard says the most important thing to do is reach out.

“You can contact Falicia Fort and Myself, Kenyatta Howard via Face book personally and we will give you the contact information for these resources,” says Howard.

They hope to make this an annual event.

In collaboration with Dig Deeper, Saturday’s event was made possible by organizations like Left Foot Forward, Safe Haven and Heavenly Decor.
