MACON, Miss. (WCBI) -A bill requiring publicly owned hospitals to be transparent and open their financial records is drawing criticism.
Right now, the proposal is in a legislative committee before being voted on.
If approved, financial reports, audits, budgets and meeting minutes would become public records.
Hospital boards could close the meeting for specific reasons.
Some medical administrators believe the law could hurt publicly owned hospitals, because they’d be required to report strategic financial plans for the future but privately owned hospitals will not.
“It places the publicly owned hospitals at a disadvantage on account of the information that’s passed out, sensitive information a lot of time that’s passed out.”
The legislation could be changed in committee before it goes back to lawmakers to be voted on.
