PONTOTOC, Miss. (WCBI) – Last week, the Pontotoc Board of Alderman voted unanimously to apply for a grant for major sewer repairs needed in the southwest area of the city. While some residents have experienced upgrades, there is still much to be done. Leaders in Pontotoc are working hard to improve their city’s sewer system. Pipes are a vital part of any growing community. For years the Green Valley subdivision has experienced the most problems when it comes to sewer systems, but one resident says she hasn’t seen any issues since they installed the new systems.
“Oh honey, I’m so happy. I mean it’s just great to come in the house and not worry about the sewers backing up in your house,” says Bonnie Swindoll.
Swindoll remembers the sewer problems all too well. It was a daily struggle.
“We had backups in the backyard, in the house – ruined my carpet and everything, but I had to take that out and replace the floors,” says Swindoll.
Last year the city applied for CDBG funding, but was unsuccessful in securing the money. Mayor Jeff Stafford says this year they are applying for an Appalachian Regional Commission Grant.
“It’s a dual package grant application; we need both together to afford it. It’s about a $500,000 project. We are trying to do a 12 inch sewer main in to replace a 10 inch,” says Mayor Jeff Stafford.
Mayor Stafford hopes better sewers will lead to a better bottom line.
“We can expand in houses and economic development in the other side of town. Right now we are kind of handcuffed on availability of land use and with the new sewer system and land requirements it will help a lot,” says Mayor Stafford.
Even though there are some residents frustrated over the matter progress has been made.
“Some people think they are not doing it, but they are. I see them out here working so hard in weather rain, thunder, lightening whatever, but they are working out here,” says Swindoll.
The project could cost up to $500,000 for the new sewer system.
