LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – He has dedicated his life to law enforcement, and now he’s finally retiring for good.
Billy Pickens is retiring from his job as Lowndes County Jail Administrator. A reception was held Thursday morning in his honor. Pickens started his 40-year-long career as a patrol officer with the Columbus Police Department. He worked his way up through the ranks and became Chief of Police. Then retired. But he began working again for the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Department. After five years as Jail Administrator he now retires again. Pickens says over the course of his career he’s seen many changes.
“Technology has been the biggest advancement in law enforcement. When I first came to work we had an antiquated walkie talkie that worked sometimes, and sometimes it didn’t. We didn’t have pagers, we didn’t have phones,” Pickens said.
Pickens says in his new free time he plans on traveling more to visit family. Friday, January 31 is his official last day of work.
