VIDEO: Parents Voice Concerns About Mistreatment In Local School District
WEIR, Miss. (WCBI)-Members of The Department of Justice were in Choctaw County Thursday Night to listen to upset parents voice their concerns about problems in the Choctaw County School District.
Parents in the school district are saying their kids are facing racism and other discrimination at the schools.
The Choctaw County School District is under a federal desegregation order, and is currently trying to get out from under the order.
Parents are appealing based on claims of mistreatment in the classroom as well as with the athletic department.
Parents tell WCBI the unfair treatment has been going on for a while, and whenever they voice their opinions to school leaders, nothing gets done.
“I think what the school is trying to do is to basically tell the nation, hey, we’re doing a great job, we’ve desegregated the school, there’s no segregation, blacks and whites are treated the same,” said Jessica Perrish, a concerned parent who has children in the Choctaw County School District. “So, if they do have the nation to close this case, basically what it’s going to do is tell everybody that we have everything worked out. Well we obviously know that that’s not true.”
The DOJ declined our request for an on camera interview or to give a statement.
They are however, scheduled to meet with the Choctaw County School District on Wednesday.
