COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – An outgoing member of the Federal Reserve Board says the nation’s economy is on firm ground for manageable and sustainable growth.
Martha Perine Beard says interest rates may rise moderately but the Federal Reserve will manage those increases to keep the economy on track. That stability has employers and workers more confident in the future, which translates into steady hiring and consumer spending. Only some kind of major global upheaval like oil prices might disrupt the current trend.
“The low oil prices really have been very positive so if something were to happen globally that would impact that, that might be a threat in my opinion.”
Beard spoke today to the Columbus Kiwanis Club.
