VIDEO: Oktibbeha County Hit-And-Run Charges

OKTIBBEHA COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – “There certainly could be more arrests but at this time we believe this was the most appropriate charge,”said Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Brett Watson.

Monday night, September 25, Oktibbeha County deputies responded to a call on Old Highway 25 in Starkville.

You can see the scene of the accident that claimed D’shante Nix’s life, here in drone video.

“We quickly discovered, was that at least 2 vehicles had struck the cyclist. The first vehicle was still on scene and the driver of that vehicle along with some others who stopped later were attempting to render aide to the victim in the case. The second vehicle, was the vehicle that left the scene of the accident,” said Watson.

Initially, surveillance video indicated the driver of the second vehicle could possibly be male.

“The video that you saw, was the only good video of the occupant that we had at the time. At that particular time, we had reason to believe he was driving the car and that’s why it was pushed out to the news media like it was,” said Watson.

After the vehicle was shown, 25 year old Haley Brooke Singleton turned herself in to law enforcement.

Singleton is charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injuries. A charge, District Attorney Scott Colom, say isn’t to be taken lightly.

“When someone leaves the scene of an accident, that results in injuries or death, that charge can carry a sentence of 20 years in prison, so it’s a very serious charge,” said Colom.

Colom says a charge like manslaughter isn’t off the table but more evidence must be found.

“The state has to prove that the person caused the death and at this point, we don’t have all the autopsy results back. Until we have that, we won’t be able to charge the person, under these sets of facts, with manslaughter just yet. The investigation is on going. Once the investigation is complete we will present the case to a grand jury and they will determine what charges are brought,” said Colom.

Watson says the investigation is ongoing.

“After hearing the factual basis of the affidavit the judges in the case increased her bond to 40 thousand dollars,”said Watson.

The driver of the first vehicle does not face charges.

The male inside the vehicle Singleton was driving has not been arrested.
