Video: Officer Tyler Cook’s Attorney Says Client ‘Relieved’ With Judge’s Decision To Dismiss Civil Suit
TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – A federal judge has dismissed all claims against the City of Tupelo and others named in a civil lawsuit filed by the family of Ronnie Shumpert, who was shot and killed by Tupelo police in June of 2016.
U S District Judge Sharion Aycock granted a motion filed by the city of Tupelo for “Summary Judgment.”
That dismissed all claims against the city, Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton, Police Chief Bart Aguirre, and Tupelo Police Officer Tyler Cook.
Officer Cook shot Shumpert during a fight behind a Harrison Street house. Shumpert ran from police during a traffic stop, hid in a crawl space under a house, and fought Officer Cook, and his K9 before the fatal shooting.
Cook’s attorney says his client is relieved with the decision by the federal judge.
“We were confident in the outcome of this case, what I really want to say is, on behalf of Officer Tyler Cook, is we are so thankful for all of the support, from law enforcement , throughout this community, state, region and nation, of people who reached out and supported him and his position throughout this very difficult time,” said Attorney Jason Herring.
Officer Cook is now working at the North Mississippi Law Enforcement Training Center. We talked briefly with Shumpert family attorney Carlos Moore, who said the family is “dumbfounded” with the judge’s decision.
