COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Tupelo, Lowndes County, and now Nettleton. All 3 shootings involved officers and all have occurred in Northeast Mississippi since December.
“It’s something that’s been happening all over the country. You see it everyday on the news,” said Lowndes County Sheriff Mike Arledge.
The growing trend of officer involved shootings in our area is a scary one and one that stands out to law enforcement. Which is why training for these scenarios is so important. Deputies and officers must qualify at a firing range, which begins at the academy and continues until they retire. From getting shocked with tazers to military training tactics, it’s hours of time spent to keep everyone safe.
“As you know, in the incident in Nettleton, in the incident where our officers got shot, we are beginning to take it more and more serious,” said Sheriff Arledge.
In today’s world, even the smallest situations can turn deadly in an instant.
“If you’ve got maybe a stop and approach and somebody comes out with a gun. Or you’re going to a active shooter at a school. If we go out on a search warrant or some type of incident, we get our officers together and say look, we know no scene is perfect, but is there something we can do maybe a little bit better, or can we get some different type of gear to help us with this job,” said Sheriff Arledge.
It’s that fundamental training, whether you’re a rookie or a veteran officer that could mean the difference between life and death.
