TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — Tupelo residents involved in the annexation got the chance to ask city officials about the changeover process involving their city services.
Residents were told that with the city fire department now servicing their neighborhoods, they should be able to get a reduction on the their homeowners policy. They also learned about plans to make sure there will be an adequate water supply for hydrants. Residents also were briefed about the necessary construction that will be taking place to install sewer lines and other services.
Mayor Jason Shelton wanted those affected to feel confident that the city is making the transition as smooth as possible.
“This was a hotly contested annexation. I campaigned on the promise of healing the wounds and opening up the dialogue with all the newly annexed residents. And just continued to work with one another, share the city’s plans and hopefully get the city services to these residents as quickly as possible.”
Shelton says the city is required by law to provide city services to every annexed resident within a reasonable period of time which is generally considered to be five years. He says they plan to conduct as many town hall style meetings as the residents want. Shelton says they want to cover topics that weren’t discussed tonight.
