NEW ALBANY, MISS. (WCBI) – It’s one of only a few ‘A’ rated schools in the state. So students, parents and faculty at New Albany High School already have plenty to be proud of when they walk down the halls. Now, the school has another feather in its cap. WCBI’s Allie Martin introduces us the the state’s new “Teacher of the Year,” one of the reasons the school ranks so highly.
Less than 24 hours after being named “Teacher of the Year” by the Mississippi Department of Education, Mary King was back on familiar turf, leading her 11th grade advanced placement English Class.
King was one of four finalists for the award. She represented the 1st Congressional District and says the honor is a reflection on the entire school district.
“I love New Albany High School, that’s why I’ve taught here for nine years, I feel like I have wonderful teachers that I work with, so I feel like this is recognition for our school and our teachers,” King said.
The New Albany native says students at the high school are top notch and she is involved in their lives, sponsoring student council and co sponsoring Students Against Destructive Decisions.
“As far as I go, that’s what I’ve always tried to do, is just be an active part in my students lives here,” she said.
King says she was surprised at the top honor, but those who work with her, and those she teaches were not shocked.
“She’s truly a deserving teacher, she’s the type teacher that always puts others first, thinks of others before herself,” said Principal Lance Evans.
“She’s somebody who cares more about the students than anything else, you can tell that’s what drives her to do her job,” said Senior Mark Robbins.
“I was not surprised, she is like the best teacher here at New Albany High School,” said Junior Joshanae Tucker.
Along with being an ambassador for educators in the Magnolia State, Mrs. King will also represent Mississippi in the National Teacher of the Year Competition in Washington DC, where she will get to meet the President and the First Lady.
