BOONEVILLE, Miss. – (WCBI) Education and technological advances go hand in hand and an institute of higher learning in our area is about to achieve a milestone involving both.
This English Class at NEMCC is starting their semester not only on the same page, but also with the same technology.
It’s part of a pilot program that allows all students in the English department and faculty to have iPads, provided by the community college.
Eventually, all students will get an iPad and administrators say it’s not just about having more technology in the classroom.
“It provides so much more knowledge to them, because we can now pull down lectures from other teachers at other schools on the same subject area, so they can pull that down and listen to that if they want to, after class or during class,” said Rickey Ford, executive vice president at NEMCC.
All NEMCC faculty have iPads and training will soon be underway as a representative from Apple will help teachers find ways to engage students in the class with technology available through the iPad.
The iPads will also help prepare students for the workforce or higher education.
NEMCC will be the first community college in the state to make iPads available to all students.
“This will carry us above and beyond the normal community college or a member of IHL, universities, as far as technology in the class and engaging students and making sure that the student is successful,” Ford said.
There is also another advantage for students.
“We will be able to buy our books on our iPads and some of the students here they are not allowed to get a lot of financial aid to help pay for books so it would save a lot more money for the students,” said Incoming Freshman Josie Reese.
NEMCC wants to provide iPads to every student starting with the fall semester of 2015.
