Video: N Mississippi Komen ‘Race For The Cure’ Awards Grants

TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – Ten non profit organizations will be able to better serve women and help in the fight against breast cancer.

This morning, Komen North Mississippi Race For The Cure Awarded $170,000 in grants to organizations such as NMMC’s Breast Care Center,  Baptist Memorial Healthcare Foundation,  and Sisters Network.

The grants will provide medically underserved women in the region access to health care and breast cancer treatment.

Grant money comes from the annual Komen North Mississippi Race for the Cure and a majority of the proceeds stay in the area.

“It’s so important to keep those funds here too, we have so much need in North Mississippi and some pockets worse that others, some counties worse than others, it’s just a constant struggle to change the mindset about breast cancer among women, that it’s not necessarily a death sentence when you get that diagnosis that there are so many things you can do now. catch it early, the importance of mammograms,” said Liz Dawson, a cancer survivor and member of N MS Komen Board.

This year’s “Race for the Cure” is set for October 24th at Fairpark in downtown Tupelo.
