COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – At least four universities in Mississippi have removed the state flag from campus grounds. With Tuesday night’s student government vote, the University of Mississippi may soon join them.
The Mississippi University for Women is the only state-supported university that has not addressed the issue publicly. With The W’s diverse student body, we wanted to find out if the issue is resonating there..
” We have both the American Flag and Confederate Flag; however, I don’t feel there is a need to take down the Confederate Flag, unless you take down the American Flag also. Because, we here at The W represent equality. To take down one flag would mean you would have to take down the other flag, so I don’t believe you should take down one flag.”
” I don’t think it’s a good idea to take down the Mississippi Flag, because the flag doesn’t represent what happened, but just represents our State. If the flag was taken down it wouldn’t change what happened, or what will happen.”
Although, The “W” still flies the State flag, Columbus’ City Council voted to remove it from other public buildings in the city.
