COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Mississippi University for Women has big plans but will need help from the legislature.
President Dr. Jim Borsig says the school wants to renovate the old Demonstration School to expand the nursing and speech language pathology program and build a new culinary arts building.
Borsig says there is a demand in state and a need on campus for the projects.
The W’s enrollment is up this spring over last year’s numbers.
Borsig is at the state Capitol almost every week during the session and remains optimistic money can be found.
“We’ll have to wait and see if this is a momentary dip in revenues, as we hope it will be, and the appropriations process is now about to begin in earnest. But I do believe that when it comes to higher education and really all of education that we’re going to see a focus on that, from a funding standpoint.”
Borsig says about 40 people applied for MUW’s athletic director position. The second round of interviews will soon begin, and he hopes to have someone hired in the next several weeks.

“We do a very good job of graduation students. The enrollment on our campus is 90% from Mississippi, which is the highest of the eight public universities, and we also have nearly that percentage of our graduates stay in state.”
