COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – MUW kicks off its annual Welty Writer’s Series this weekend and author Sonny Brewer will be the keynote speaker for Thursday (10/18) symposium.
Brewer says that receiving an “A” on a college writing assignment changed his life forever and gave him the courage to become a writer.
Sonny Brewer was born in Alabama but went to Lee High School in Columbus. He began writing as a freshman in college but didn’t publish his first book until he was 52. Brewer now has 14 published novels and was recently awarded 2012 Alabama Library Association Book award for fiction. Brewer says that aspiring writers should read as much as possible.
“You read Huckleberry Finn, John Grisham, Eudora Welty or Robert Bridegroom. You read those words and somehow for that repetitive, constant reading, for being an avid reader, something rubs off on you,” says Brewer.
Brewer also says he’s honored to be the keynote speaker and is looking forward to talking with aspiring writers.
The MUW writers symposium is free and begins at 7:30.
