LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — The clean-up from tornado damage continues as families prepare to celebrate Mother’s Day.
One Lowndes County family says they’re not going to let the twister keep them from spoiling their mom on her special day.
Like many other families, the Schillings in East Lowndes County are still cleaning up after the April 28th tornado. Matriarch Julie Schilling describes surviving the tornado with one word.
“Grateful,” says Schilling.
The roof of their home was badly damaged after surrounding trees toppled during the storm.
“Well we basically lost 1/3 of the roof and underneath, there are 3 rooms and all the furniture in it. So we’re in the process of trying to get all that back together,” Schilling explains.
May 11th is Mother’s Day. Schilling says as a mom, this year she’s simply happy her family is safe.
“I’m just thankful that everybody’s ok. My family made it out without a scratch. My house, not so much but my family’s alright,” says Schilling.
The Schillings plan to have a mother’s day dinner for Julie and make sure she takes time to relax.
“Hopefully she has a good day. Try to just take everything easy for once. Ever since then, we haven’t stopped trying to fix up everything and help everyone,” says Roger Schilling, Julie’s son.
Schilling says she’ll be happy just to sleep in her own bedroom again. Mother’s Day will provide a much-needed break for the entire family. Her husband and brother have been repairing storm damage for the last 2 weeks.
