MONROE COUNTY, MISS. (WCBI) – It began as a tip by Mississippi Alcohol Beverage Control that moonshine was being sold from a home on Okolona Road. When Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputies raided the residence, they found the illegal booze and much more.
Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell says 67 year old Russell Jones, and his two sons, 26 year old Jeremy and 22 year old Patrick, were arrested at the scene. They face a number of charges such as possession of marijuana, moonshining, possession of stolen guns and dogfighting.
“They had 15 pit bulls that they were fighting, they were giving those dogs steriods and also muscle builders, they were fighting these dogs, all these things, drugs and fighting dogs just kind of goes hand in hand,” Sheriff Cantrell said.l
According to the sheriff, Russell Jones lives at the house, but his sons were frequent visitors and were involved in the illegal activities.
“People who thought they could get away with breaking the law,” Sheriff Cantrell said.
The sheriff says the lure of seemingly easy money is just too much of a temptation for some folks, but he points out there is a high price to pay.
“They make thousands of dollars fighting these dogs, there’s a lot of money in this, it’s a big thing , here in North Mississippi and we are going to put a stop to it here, we’re not going to have that here in our county,” he said.
Sheriff Cantrell says more arrests are possible in the case.
Sheriff Cantrell says one horse found on the property had to be euthanized because it had not been cared for.
