VERONA, MISS. (WCBI) – Even though it’s winter, landscaping companies are busy.
Crews from Landscape Services, Incorporated are performing winter maintenance on yards across Northeast Mississippi.
Landscape professionals must keep up with current practices and other regulations.
That’s why the co owner of Landscape Services spent part of the day at a roadshow sponsored by the Mississippi Turfgrass Association.
“Well, it’s continuing education, and meeting the guys that are in the industry, people here from all over North Mississippi,” said Harry Collins, co-owner of Landscape Services, Inc.
Landscape contractors, researchers, and park and rec workers heard about a host of topics, such as turfgrass disease identification, herbicides for landscape week management and managing turf for financial ecological benefit.
Professionals say it’s important to keep up with ever changing regulations regarding herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers.
“Especially, all the new chemicals coming out, that’s the big issue right now, changing them up every year, it seems like so learning something new about the chemicals, what we can put out and what we can’t put out.” said Stevie Shaw, NMMC Landscaping Specialist.
Organizers of the roadshow say homeowners who hire landscapers benefit from this roadshow.
“There’s a DIY component to everything we do, homeowners very often want to maintain their own lawns but there’s a certain element of things we can’t do, and for those types of scenarios we hire professionals who we hire because they have skills outside of our own,” said Jay McCurdy, MSU Turfgrass Specialist.
Commercial and Residential professional landscapers also say a strong economy means steady growth for their industry.
The Mississippi Turfgrass Association Roadshow is held each year, in a different city.
