STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI/MSU Athletics) — Sophomore transfer Jacob Barfield crushed a three-run home run in the top of the seventh to lift Gray to a 9-6 victory against Maroon in Game 5 of the Bulldog World Series Wednesday night at Dudy Noble Field. The seven-inning exhibition marked Mississippi State’s 20th and final scrimmage of the fall.
Barfield finished the game 1 for 2 with three RBIs, three runs and a pair of walks. Also collecting multiple hits for Gray were redshirt junior outfielder Jacob Robson (2 for 3, 2 RBIs, two walks, double) and junior first baseman Nathaniel Lowe (2 for 4, RBI, run).
Freshman right-handed pitcher Ryan Cyr picked up the victory with two scoreless innings of relief. Maroon reliever Cole Gordon suffered the loss by giving up the home run to Barfield.
Despite giving up the long ball, Gordon carried his team offensively with three hits, including a double and a home run. The redshirt freshman slugger drove in four runs and scored once. Also collecting two-plus hits for Maroon was senior infielder Matt Spruill, who went 2 for 2 with a double and a walk.
Gray seemed to be on the verge of a run-away victory in the first thanks to three runs on five straight hits.
Maroon countered in the home half of the inning with a two-run double to the gap in left by Gordon. The home team then tied the game in the second when freshman outfielder Jake Mangum scored on a wild pitch.
Tied at three, the teams both scored one run in the fourth, before Gordon lined a two-run homer over the right field wall to give Maroon a 6-4 lead in the fifth.
Gray tied it at six in the sixth thanks to an RBI double from Robson and a sacrifice fly from freshman infielder Hunter Stovall.
Barfield hit the game-winning homer in the seventh after Lowe singled to second base and senior catcher Josh Lovelady hit a base knock over Spruill’s head at third.
