Video: Metcalfe Looks To Keep His Team On The Winning Track
SULLIGENT, Ala. (WCBI) – The Sulligent Blue Devils are riding high after a 3-0 start to the season.
A huge contributor to the team’s success this season has been senior running back Tyreke Metcalfe.
Metcalfe also has enjoyed being apart of being a blue devil.
“It’s been fun with my friends all growing up,” said student athlete Tyreke Metcalfe. “And you got to thank the Lord first, then you got to thank my line, because if I hadn’t had the line I wouldn’t be running all over the place.”
Sulligent has made the playoffs each of the last four seasons. The team has also made some history this season with a huge win over a 4-a team in Hamilton that ended a 19 year drought, but Metcalfe says each of the three wins has been a grind.
“It’s been really tough out here in the cold,” Metcalfe said. “The rain, then you got the heat, the weather changing. Then you got everybody wanting to go home, but then again you got to work at it to be the best. You got to be the best. You got to be number one. We want that number one spot.”
“Through three games this season Metcalfe has 241 yards rushing, 138 receiving yards, and six total touchdowns. Head coach Daniel Merchant and his teammates know the athleticism that he brings on the field in practice and in games.
“He comes to practice and works hard every day,” said head coach Daniel Merchant. “He’s a dynamic player and a great kid to be around.”
“He’s been a good friend hanging out and everything, but on the field he’s always taking it serious,” said teammate Hayden Nolen. “He’s focused. Always striving to get better.”
“He keeps the game interested,” adds teammate CJ McLemore. “Keeps the crowd on their feet. Real good leader. Just fun to play with him.”
Just two weeks ago the Sulligent Blue Devils won their third game of the season going 3-0 for the first time since 1966. That also happened to be the last time this team won a state championship. Now Metcalfe says this team has the capability to do that again.
“I think we are going to the championship this year sir,” Metcalfe said. “That’s all I think. Thinking about the championship, being there playing and winning it. That’s a great feeling right there.”
Sulligent looks to stay undefeated this week as they travel to Phil Campbell on Friday.
