COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Some folks in Columbus got out bright and early Saturday morning to take a walk with the mayor.
Columbus Mayor Robert Smith, Mississippi University for Women students, and the community took a stroll at the Columbus Riverwalk.
A group of nursing students at MUW organized the free event to encourage people to take control of their health and get moving.
After doing a community health assessment, students saw a need for a physical fitness program.
Research shows that walking can help prevent obesity and diabetes.
This year’s theme is “to lead by example, inspire and empower the community by improving the quality of health.”
This is the first year for the Mayor’s Health Walk.
