MATHISTON, Miss.(WCBI)–Using a model which is part of the National Quilt of Valor Program, a Mathiston quilting club is making a quilt for a local veteran wounded in combat.
A Delaware mother of a veteran began the Quilts of Valor Foundation from her sewing room. Her son being deployed to Iraq provided the initial inspiration, and her desire to see that returning warriors were welcomed home with the love and gratitude they deserved.
Master Quilter Carol Cantrell has been crafting quilts from piecing of cloth since 1999. Cantrell along with half dozen other women have been meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Sherwood Community Center between the months of September and May.
“I got the community involved and people wanted to build a big center here so this community center actually, the idea came from the ladies with quilting,” said Carol Cantrell/Master Quilter.
There are beautiful designs and familiar and unique patterns on the quilts, every garment is crafted with perfection and professional skill.
“Patterns some of them were made in the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s. They are called the heirloom quilts now. Oh no, they are not easy to do,” said Carol Cantrell.
Among these works of art, a special patriotic quilt is being put together and is being presented to MSG Byron Wilson injured while serving with the Army Reserves in Iraq during Operation Desert Storm. Sherwood Quilter Reba Pinnix is overwhelmed and touched with every stick. There is the memory of her husband Hubert Huland Pinnix, a World War Two Veteran.
“He was drafted back in the 40’s and of course all that came back to my mind. Of what I went through and what he went through,” said Reba Pinnix/Sherwood Quilters.
“They make them sometimes for soldiers who return who are wounded. They take them to the hospitals to give them. They go to the nursing homes to give the veterans of World War Two, Korean War, of course now and the men from Vietnam,” said Carol Cantrell.
That patriotic quilt of valor is going to officially be presented to Master Sargent Wilson on Saturday at the Eupora Country Club.
