MACON, Miss. (WCBI) — A machine gun with a mostly unknown history is up for sale by Macon’s Board of Aldermen.
Macon’s City Hall has been home to a Reising Model 50 machine gun manufactured by Harrington and Richardson Arms Company in Massachusetts.
Interestingly enough, the weapon is shrouded in mystery as City Hall staffers and officials are uncertain as to how it ended up there. Some 100,000 of the particular firearm were made during the later portion of World War II, most of which were handed off to the US Marine Corps.
However, history buffs gun collectors now have a chance purchase the firearm as aldermen recently declared the gun as surplus property.
“The gun has been here in the vault and has been in the box up there, so, we felt like if it could bring a fair market value, that will be money the city can use rather than just having a 1940 model gun in a case sitting in our vault,” Macon Mayor Bob Boykin said.
Aldermen are accepting sealed bids until 4 p.m. August 5, and will open the bids publicly at 5:30 p.m. the same day.
Individuals interested in submitting a bid must include a copy of a Class 3 Fire Arms license from the ATF.
