LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)- Planning for the future is paying off for Lowndes County industry recruitment in more ways than one.
Wednesday, Lowndes County board of supervisors approved spending $300,000 to buy land for one project and to get an appraisal on the county’s 3 year-old spec building.
The county and a private company, Agracel, built the 100,000 square foot building 3 years ago with the idea of luring a new industry.
Now, the Industrial Development Authority has a company that’s interested.
They will not say how many jobs or anything about the prospect but they say they feel good about landing the company.
Meanwhile, supervisors have approved buying 46 acres next to the industrial park’s wastewater treatment plant for future expansion.
The expansion may not come for a few years but buying the property now has the county ready to expand as more and more industries are attracted to the more than 2,000 acres in the industrial center surrounding Golden Triangle Regional Airport.
Brenda Lathan is VP of Economic Development for link. She says the expansion is a great investment in the future.
“In the long run, it’s going to save the community a lot of money because if we had not purchased this land we would have to make more adjustments that would cost more money,” says Lathan.
The announcement on the spec building could come as soon as two weeks.
The county will pay for the land and the building from a 13 million dollar U.S.D.A. loan taken out two years ago to prepare for industrial growth.
