Video: “Look Away, Look Away”: “Dixie” Disappearing from University of Mississippi Repertoire

OXFORD, Miss. (WCBI) – In the middle of the “land of cotton” an old tune may soon be forgotten..

The University of Mississippi Athletic Department announced this week that the “Pride of the South” band will no longer play any variation of “Dixie” during football games.

Athletic Director Ross Bjork requested a new pre-game show that would be “more inclusive for all fans “.

The new playlist is the latest move by the University to shed Old South imagery.

“Dixie” was the unofficial national anthem of the Confederacy during the Civil War.

The band has been phasing out variations of the tune for over a year.
