COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) -Columbus Police Department recently set up it’s own Twitter account and it’s already helping investigators solve crimes.

Interim Chief Fred Shelton says anonymous tips on social media helped them get a beat on suspects in two cases.

One involving people using stolen credit cards. The other on the Lowe’s felony shoplifting cases. Shelton also says the account is helping the police department better engage with the community.

“We used it also to let people know that, during the holiday season, that hey, the police were out, was out in actual force like during Black Friday, showing we were out. We were out doing foot patrol, we were out patrolling around the businesses just making people safe.”
Investigators say an arrest in the felony shoplifting case will be made shortly. Shelton also ask the public to follow their Twitter and Facebook accounts and to provide tips and information on anything happening in your community.
