VIDEO: A Loaded Handgun Found On School Grounds Sends One Area High School On Lockdown
NETTLETON, Miss. (WCBI)- Students and parents in Nettleton were on edge after a loaded gun was found at the high school prompting a lock down.
That lock down lasted nearly two hours.
The Lee County Sheriff Office said it was just before nine o’clock Tuesday morning when they receive a tip that a weapon was on school grounds.
Deputies quickly began their search and found a loaded handgun inside a backpack.
As deputies interviewed students on the incident, Sheriff Jim Johnson said one student left the campus, and was reported as a runaway.
The juvenile was since been located and is safe. Sheriff Johnson said he’s glad no one was hurt in the incident.
“The scary thing about it is, if we go back to square one and we were not ever made aware of this the threat, it’s scary to think what could’ve happened,” said Sheriff Johnson. “Even with all of the planning in place, even with everybody being trained and everything else in play, if that thing had gotten in the hands of the wrong person or if it would have been used for whatever purpose it went down there for, you would have been dealing with a whole different situation.”
Because the person who’s accused of bringing the gun on campus is a juvenile, his name can’t be released at this time.
The school went back to normal operations after the gun was retrieved and everything was under control.
