MOOREVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — A Lee County homeowner faces a misdemeanor charge after authorities say she allowed minors to drink alcohol during a birthday party for her teenage son.
On Friday afternoon, Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson was told about this social media post promoting a party in Mooreville.
That evening, the sheriff says deputies received a call about loud music at the residence on county road 1451. Deputies contacted the home owner, Angie Culver Floyd, and told her about the complaint.
Later that evening, another complaint brought deputies back to the area, where they made a traffic stop. Sheriff Johnson says alcohol and drugs were found in the vehicle and all occupants were minors who had been to the party at Floyd’s home.
Sheriff Johnson says he and several deputies went back to the location, and found more than 50 cars parked along the narrow road, some were blocking traffic and several were stuck in the mud.
Johnson says he met with Floyd around 11:30 that night back at the home.
“She told us the party had gotten out of hand, she planned on this 17 year old birthday party and that all these people showed up, that there was drinking, and she was trying to make sure everybody who left had a designated driver. At that point I explained the social hosting law to her, which basically says, if you are over the age of 21 and you allow anyone on your property that possesses or consumes alcohol under the age of 21 then you violated the law,” said Sheriff Johnson.
“I thought I did everything right, in trying to protect my child and the other child’s. We were going to watch them, supervise them, make sure everything is ok, been a child advocate for a long time. This person who posted that on social media, without my permission and gave my address, I don’t know how to protect people from that,” Floyd said.
Several minors were arrested and taken to the Lee County Juvenile Detention Center. Sheriff Johnson says more than 100 people were at the party. Guests ranged in age from 14 to over 40. He also says alcohol, drugs and paraphernalia were found.
