SHANNON, MISS. (WCBI) – A Shannon Elementary School student wins big in a contest meant to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco.
The Mississippi Tobacco Free Coalition sponsored a contest recently asking students submit entries for a contest.
Students were asked to find “Terrence The Rat” made popular in “Reject All Tobacco” campaigns. Out of the thousands of entries received, Shannon Elementary Fifth Grader Ladana White was selected.
“Reject All Tobacco is the only k through sixth program in the country so our idea is we start young, and not only do we start young so when they’re offered that as teenagers they will reject all tobacco but they will teach up as well,” said Sara Johnston, of Partnership for a Healthier Mississippi.
“I’m very excited, I’m so excited, I’m almost about to cry, I’m very excited, I never thought it would come to me,” said Fifth Grader Ladana White.
This is the first time a winner has been chosen from the Northern part of Mississippi. Ladana won a Kindle Fire tablet.
