Video: Late Tupelo Coach and Teacher Honored at Park
TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – The work of a teacher, coach, and brick mason is memorialized at a Tupelo park.
Modern Woodmen of America donated a United States flag that will be flown at Tupelo’s Green Street Grove Park, also known as “Mrs. Nettie’s Park.”
The flag was donated in memory of Fred Davis, husband of Councilwoman Nettie Davis. Fred Davis passed away this summer. He was a longtime coach, teacher and brick mason.
The park where the flag will fly was once known as a haven for drug activity, but Nettie and Fred Davis, along with help from the police and community, worked hard for positive change.
“I think about when he was busy working down here, and so the flowers and all of the things in it let me know he’s still living in my heart and in the community in which he loved so much.”
“This is a great example of community working alongside the police department and using their different things to enhance the community, which is what it’s all about.”
Fred Davis, along with his students, laid the bricks throughout the park.
