COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — “It’s a problem everywhere. They tend to get overflowed with lots and lots of cats.”
A furry frenzy of adorable kittens are taking over Columbus Lowndes Humane Society.
“In our summer months, we’ll probably take in 300 cats in one month. And we’re a small shelter so you can imagine your bigger shelters in bigger areas,” said Jason Nickles with the Columbus Lowndes Humane Society.
They’re not alone. All throughout the country there’s a baby boom of little cats with nowhere to go.
“Unfortunately the adoption rates on them aren’t as high as you would think because last month, we only adopted out like 30 cats. And that’s because they’re everywhere,” said Nickles.
Veterinarian Kimberly Woodruff says the reason for it is the season.
“Kittens cycle multiple times a year but a lot of that is influenced by the hours in the day and the temperature and so when things start warming up, we start seeing kittens all over the place,” said Woodruff.
If you are a pet owner, there are several things you can do to slow down your frisky feline.
“Have your pet spayed or nurtured. If you are in a place where there’s stray cats of feral cats, you can work with your local shelter. Most cities or counties have access to a local shelter that helps place those animals and care for those animals that don’t have homes,” said Woodruff.
And ofcourse, these playful pets are always looking for a home.
“It’s a matter of coming in and paying $35. You have to fill out some paperwork and then we’ll get you on our roster,” said Nickles.
If you’d like to adopt a pet, there are plenty of nearby animal shelters in our area.
