Video: Jett Johnson Looks To Finish Out His Senior Year Strong
TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — “Super Jett” ready to fly high for Tupelo.
The Tupelo Golden Wave are looking to go 3-0 this week with Clarksdale rolling in to town on Friday.
One of the biggest reasons to the Golden Wave’s success is the three year defensive starter Jett Johnson.
Johnson has played at Tupelo his whole life, and he’s had a great career in the gold and blue.
“I love it here,” said student athlete Jett Johnson. “Great coaching staff here. Great teammates. It’s like a brotherhood here. Everybody is tight. That’s the main thing I love here.”
Johnson has always been a nightmare for opposing coaches and players. Even early on in his career when he was playing football.
“My family has been a football family growing up going to the game,” Johnson said. “And to be honest with you I didn’t really like it to much back in my younger days, because I was an offensive lineman. Those guys don’t get enough credit. I realize how important that is now.”
Johnson played quarterback from seventh to ninth grade, but with a quarterback already in place head coach Trent Hammond knew he wanted Johnson on the field heading into his sophomore year.
“I absolutely think it’s the best position for him,” said head coach Trent Hammond. “He’s a dandy dozen. I’m partial. I think he’s probably one of the best in the state at that position, or if not the best in the state. Best senior for sure at that position.”
Johnson’s teammate also has seen the work that he’s put in practice to make the team better.
“Jett, he’s a good teammate,” said teammate Jordan Jernigan. “Makes sure everybody is doing what they’re doing. Gets the defense ready. Be a leader on defense, but’s he’s a pretty good athlete.”
Muitiple college schools are after Johnson to play at the next level. Right now Johnson is committed to play at Mississippi State in 2018, and he’s built a good relationship with the coaches in Starkville.
“Coach Mullen and I have a good relationship,” Johnson said. “I’ve been a state fan my whole life, and being in Davis Wade and hearing all the cowbells is unreal. I’m ready to run through the tunnel.”
The Golden Wave finished 12-1 before losing to Madison Central in the 2nd round of the playoffs in 2016. Johnson hopes his senior year can be a different outcome.
“This year I think we have a target on our back,” Johnson said. “We’ve used that as motivation this season, and we are going to try to prove to everybody that we are still one of the best teams in the state.”
Tupelo returns to action on Friday when they host Clarksdale.
