ITAWAMBA COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – A tragic fire that took the lives of two children and two adults in Itawamba County leaves a family in mourning. Family members are still trying to get over the shock and are asking for help.
“There are no words to describe how I’m feeling right now. I’ve lost four babies. I shouldn’t have lost them,” says Shelia Hurley, the matriarch of the Hurley family.
Police woke Shelia Hurley about five Tuesday morning. She was told her daughter Susan, granddaughter Shelby and her two great grandchildren, a toddler and a three month old baby were killed.
“I was over there two days before this happened and I didn’t know that was going to be the last time I gave my babies a goodbye kiss, a hug, tell them I love them,” says Hurley.
There were nine people inside the trailer at the time of the blaze. A family friend helped Hurley’s other three grandchildren escape. The grandmother doesn’t know how she’s going to provide a proper burial for her family.
“I need funds because I don’t have the funds to bury my daughter and even have a funeral for her. I just feel like somebody just ripped all my insides out. They said you have two grand babies up here in the hospital,” says Hurley.
Hurley says family members are staying with her two grandchildren that are still hospitalized. She’s receiving help from the American Red Cross in Tupelo.
