MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — Two Monroe County animal rescue groups are trying to find homes for huskies that have apparently been dumped in recent weeks.
The situation has shed light on a big problem throughout the area.
For as long as she can remember, Lauren Barnett has had a soft spot for stray animals.
Late last year, Barnett started the non profit group, “Never Ending Tails” Rescue.
Strays are brought to the Barnett family home, and recently, six male huskies have been discovered throughout the county.
“We just figured maybe somebody might have been breeding, raising huskies, we don’t know, we wanted to sort of find out what was going on with them, we didn’t know, especially this type of dog,” Barnett said.
This husky was found behind the Food Giant in Aberdeen, tangled in some brush. Now, “Cochise” is up for adoption, if his owner can’t be found. Barnett says huskies are more suited for colder climates.
“If nobody claims him, I’d really like him to find good homes up north, so they can be in the climate they prefer, you can’t tell me this Mississippi humidity, they like,” she said.
She says many dogs are abandoned because they are never properly taken care of by their owners.
“To me , it’s a whole lot cheaper getting your dog spayed and neutered then having a bunch of pups and having to feed them,” Barnett said.
Never Ending Tails Rescue is an expensive undertaking. Barnett pays for visits to the vet and food for the dogs out of her own pocket. She is looking for donors and volunteers who share her passion to come alongside her and help share the mission.
