HOULKA, Miss. (WCBI)-For some the holidays can bring more heartache than joy. That’s why one Chickasaw county teen is using warmth and a full stomach to restore joy this holiday season.
During the holidays some people are more worried about food and warmth instead of shopping for their relatives.
19-year old Hannah Warren, wanted to find a way to give back to those less fortunate in her home town of Houlka Mississippi.
“I was in class we watched a video on homeless people and it just really hit home with me just because we live in such a small town you really don’t see people on the streets begging but you know there are people out there with needs,” says Hannah Warren.
In November Warren held a coat drive for all sizes for men, women and children. She says it didn’t take long for the community to offer support.
“People that I called called people. People started bringing coats in, people started donating. I’ve had money donations as well. I had four turkeys donated which were anonymous. People have just really great support and feed back from this,” says Warren.
Denise Buchanan says this event gives parents the opportunity to provide the basics for their families.
“It’s going to help perfect because you know most parents that don’t got no money out here to go get coats and stuff for their kids,” says Denise Buchanan.
Warren says it’s through the generous donations and help from others that made this event successful.
“I’m really blessed and thankful that I was able to do something like this and I just really thank my community and friends and family for helping pull it all together,” says Warren.
Over 200 coats were collected for the event.
