TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – Students may be out of school for Thanksgiving break but special camps at area schools and centers offer a chance to learn about the history of the holiday, while keeping their minds and bodies sharp.
The first full day of Thanksgiving break was busy for thirty or so kids at Healthworks’ seasonal camp.
“Today’s camp is Pilgrims, Pumpkins and Pocahontas,” says Healthworks educator, Kim Burleson.
Everything had a Thanksgiving theme, from making their own unsalted butter from heavy whipping cream to hand-made crafts, and a lot of exercise time.
“It’s Thanksgiving Tag.”
The camp’s subtle lesson is one we all could use, healthy eating and exercising, especially during the holidays.
“They’re going to be exercising, but hopefully they are not going to be realizing they’re exercising, they will be having so much fun,” said Burleson.
After Thanksgiving Tag, students enjoyed lunch with some traditional Thanksgiving dishes.
It was also a chance to learn about that first Thanksgiving meal in 1621 and what times were like back then.
Camper Maggie Laney said, “The pilgrims came on the Mayflower.”
Camper Elena Dearing explained, “They ate turkey also, because the Indians would help them hunt, eat and survive through the winters and all that.”
Healthworks educators hope the students leave with a deeper understanding of Thanksgiving and the importance of developing healthy habits at a young age.
Healthworks! has several holiday-themed camps scheduled during the Christmas season.
