Video: High School Students Explore the Manufacturing World

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – Fifteen young people are spending their week learning about technologies, skills and other important aspects of advanced manufacturing. It’s all part of an annual camp designed to spark students’ interest in an ever changing and expanding field. WCBI’s Allie Martin has more.

These students are getting hands on lessons in all aspects of advanced manufacturing. For this session, they are learning about welding.

This is the seventh year for the TEK2Go Advanced Manufacturing Camp. It was developed for 12 to 16 year olds, who like to build things .

It also gives them an opportunity to learn about possible careers in advanced manufacturing.

“We want them to see that manufacturing now requires high skills, college training a lot of times.”

While this group was busy welding, the rest of the campers were at the Smart Lab, taking part in an exercise that encouraged teamwork and critical thinking.

“They are using a kit called Connex and they are building a ramp. We’re going to see who can get the ball to go the furtherest distance.”

Youngsters say this camp is fun and educational.

“We’ve done a lot that I’ve never got the chance to do, so new experiences.”

“I wanted to learn something new, about technology.”

These whiz kids will continue learning throughout the week, in classroom settings, and also on tours at area industries. In Tupelo I’m Allie Martin WCBI News.
