COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Seniors from Columbus’ Heritage Academy are working to improve literacy… one book at a time. Each year the Senior class takes on a service project. This year the students chose to tackle two issues, Hunger and Literacy with a program called “Feed and Read”.
Today, with some help from the Columbus Junior Auxiliary, they took on the “read” end of things, and honored one of the area’s favorite Literacy advocates, Edwina Williams, better known as Mother Goose to a couple of generations of Columbus residents.
The students dedicated a “little library” at the JA pavilion in Lee Park to Williams. The little libraries are open to the public, and allow people to read and share books.
“We found the Little Free Library organization, which is the national non-profit organization,” said Heritage Academy Senior, Mary Douglass Kerby. “We decided that it would be a great addition to Columbus, because kids can take a book and return a book. And it’s for all ages; it’s just a great promotion of literacy throughout the community.”
The Heritage students tackle the “feed” side of things through their work with food banks at Helping Hands and the Salvation Army.
