GUNTOWN, Miss. (WCBI) – A Northeast Mississippi cheer squad gets high marks at a prestigious national competition. As WCBI’s Allie Martin reports, for members of the Guntown Middle School cheerleading squad, the award shows that hard work, dedication and a team spirit pay off.
Since last spring Guntown Middle School cheerleaders have been practicing and polishing their routine
Earlier this month, the squad competed in the UCA National High School Cheerleading Competition at Walt Disney World Resort. They placed eighth.
“It is a pretty big deal, most of the schools that win or place in the top ten have been going for years and this was our school’s first time to ever go.”
The Tigers cheer team was invited after a great showing in regionals last November. Coach DeAnna Gable says the 28 member squad and mascot had a specific goal for nationals.
“We had to compete in first round of competition and only the top 12 teams were taken and so that was our goal, was just to make it to finals so they actually surpassed what our original goal was by placing in the top ten.”
Both team captains say the strong showing at Nationals proves that a unified spirit, along with expectations of excellence go a long way.
“When we came off the mat and we hit a perfect routine, we were really excited about that because we usually we don’t hit that a good of a routine, and we did it the best we have ever done. It was an amazing feeling that we all worked as a team , we put our hearts on the mat.”
“Like all girls, we have drama sometimes, but in the end we always come together , and stick together and we will always be best friends and family, this is like our second family.”
