STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)-
The rules for allowing guns on campuses at Mississippi universities can be confusing.
Students and employees of the schools cannot have a weapon, regardless of whether they have training.
However, the same rule does not always apply for visitors to campus.
“In reaction to the action of the Mississippi state legislature, the Mississippi state college board then amended their policies and gave instructions to the eight universities to develop specific polices regulating how concealed carry would be implemented on college campuses.” said Salter.
Mississippi State Chief Communications Office Sid Salter says there are very specific rules in place.
“The policy that’s been developed and that we’ve shared with you has a specific list of places on our campus where people with IC certification with the IC sticker on their permit will be allowed to carry.” said Salter.
While people can holster a gun in certain places with their instructor certified sticker that allows enhanced carry, some places are still off limits.
“There are a number of places, academic buildings, administrative offices, residence halls other places, athletic venues where both state law and IHL policy which says that those concealed carry’s will not be permitted.” said Salter.
Students could face criminal charges for having a gun on campus.
Justin Jarvis, an MSU student, is certified to carry and feels students should be able to carry.
“My opinion, if they’re legal, like if they have their concealed and enhanced carry then I think they should be allowed.” said Salter.
That is as long as they are responsible permit holders.
“Because I’m a competent firearms user, like I train somewhat regularly like I train at least once or twice a month and so I have both of those and I would feel safe.” said Salter.
