LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — For gun owners where children are in the home, every precaution should be taken to avoid accidental or negligent discharge of any weapon of any caliber. There may sometimes be a difference of opinion when it comes to gun use, but all agree efforts should be taken to minimize the risk of death, injury, or damages.
“If the gun is in one place and the ammo is in another place then there is less chance of a child, you know coming across that and figuring out how to get the gun loaded,” says Greg Vaughan of Gary’s Pawn & Gun.
“Whether they are together or separate, you know you need to make sure that precaution is made so that the children can’t get to them,” says Starkville Officer Joshua Wilson.
Any operator of potentially lethal weapon, should clear it, knowing just whats inside.
“A lot of times people will say their gun is unloaded and its not. You need to know whether your gun is loaded or not,” adds Vaughan.
One main aspect of gun safety requires the owner to above all… keep the weapon secure in it’s proper place.
“In something like a lock box or any other means to keep children from getting access to them,” says Officer Wilson.
“They can go by your night stand, a four digit combination, you can put that in. And access your weapon,” says Vaughan.
When a gun is involved and safety in needed, remember it only takes a second for life to forever be changed.
