GULFPORT, Miss. (WCBI) -Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant says he stands by the state-wide vote from 14 years ago. At that time, voters supported keeping the flag design the same. Bryant says he doesn’t see the need to re-visit the issue.
“The people voted on this flag in 2001. It was on the ballot, overwhelmingly supported the current flag in the state of Mississippi.
I don’t think we need to go about trying to supersede the will of the people. The discussion was certainly not deaf tone to but the vote was taken. It was on the ballot. And I think across the state of Mississippi, a fairly strong vote to keep it.”
Lt. Governor Tate Reeves agrees the choice should be made by voters and not politicians. In a statement Tuesday Reeves says changing the flag is something citizens of the state may want to revisit and will:
” Best be decided by the people of Mississippi”
In his official statement, Mississippi Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann said:
“If the flag does not represent our citizens today, then we, as a body, should select one that does. ”
