Video: Golden Wave Football Team Brings Out Fans, But ‘Super Fan’ Is A Mainstay
TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – From the opening kickoff at the last home game, Golden Wave fans were fired up.
And on the front row, in the student section, Gerald Cleveland was in his usual spot, chanting along with the cheerleaders.
“Go, fight, beat the Eagles,” Cleveland cheered.
The 52 year old Tupelo resident has been a fixture at the games since 1979.
Cleveland graduated from Tupelo High in 1983. He makes all of the home games, and travels to see the team play on the road. For Cleveland, this season brings back fond memories of past winning seasons.
“This season has been very good, because they are undefeated, it’s like the 1983 team, the 1988 team and the 1992 state championship team,” Cleveland said.
His nickname is “Super Fan” and Cleveland also attends all baseball and basketball games.
“I always have liked Tupelo because it’s my alma mater, and regardless of whether they have a good year or bad year, I come to support them,” Cleveland said.
Of course, this season could set new records, and fans of all ages are pumped up about the football team, and how it is impacting the community.
“I think it really helps bring the school together , it puts a little pep in everybody’s step,” said Mike Clayborne.
“It’s pretty interesting to watch how they win, and how many touchdowns, and what is the score,” said Avery Wilson.
“I’ve heard a lot about how great our coach is this year, the football team is really enthusiastic, so I’m feeling pretty happy , honored to be representing Tupelo High School,” said Tekeyra Shelton.
“I’m so excited to see an undefeated team, because I’ve never seen an undefeated football team in high school before,” said Emmalee Blaylock.
And while all fans hope the winning streak continues, “Super Fan” will be cheering his team on, regardless of the final score.
If the Golden Wave is victorious against Olive Branch, it will mark the fist time the team has won eleven straight games in a regular season.
